Coonawarra ‘Icon’ Merlot 2013
What is Merlot?
Merlot is a dark blue-coloured wine grape variety that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the colour of the grape.
Its softness and “fleshiness”, combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin. –

About The Wine and Icon:
All hail the king!!!
We had a long hard think about what iconic figure we could match with our new Coonawarra Icon Merlot 2013. We tasted the wine around the tasting bench and the common thread was smooth, sensual, elegant charismatic flavours with rich classy fruit. This could be the King of Merlot’s we thought and who better to match it with than the one and only King of rock and roll who really started it all.
This Icon began his singing career with the legendary Sun Records label in Memphis. In late 1955, his recording contract was sold to RCA Victor. By 1956, he was an international sensation. With a sound and style that uniquely combined his diverse musical influences and blurred and challenged the social and racial barriers of the time, he ushered in a whole new era of American music and popular culture.
He starred in 33 successful films, made history with his television appearances and specials, and knew great acclaim through his many, often record-breaking, live concert performances on tour and in Las Vegas. Globally, he has sold over one billion records, more than any other artist.
Without any of the special privileges, his celebrity status might have afforded him, he honourably served his country in the U.S. Army. His talent, good looks, sensuality, charisma, and good humour endeared him to millions, as did the humility and human kindness he demonstrated throughout his life.
Known the world over by his first name, he is regarded as one of the most important figures of twentieth-century popular culture. He left us on August 16, 1977.
We recommend when drinking this beautiful Coonawarra Icon Merlot 2013 you sit back and put in his music and soak in the flavours and that unmistakable sound of this iconic individual we lost way too soon.
Comments from Wine Buyer Steve:
King of Merlots and King of rock and roll. These two go hand in hand and I was amazed when I tasted this Merlot. It is complex and well-structured wine showing delicious fruit of fleshy plums and raspberries with a touch of spice and hint of vanilla and elegant and vibrant wine that is well balanced with a soft dry finish and lush velvety tannins.
My score 94/100 – WACC Gold Medal
