Coonawarra ‘Icon’ Shiraz 2014
What is Shiraz
The French and Americans call it Syrah, we call it Shiraz. A versatile variety and well suited to a range of climates and can be found in most of the grape-growing regions of Australia.
In hot climates (such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale of South Australia), Shiraz is more consistently full-bodied with softer tannin, jammier fruit and spice notes of liquorice, anise and earthy leather. In many regions, the acidity and tannin levels of Shiraz allows the wines produced from the grape to have favourable ageing potential.

About The Wine and Icon:
The Iconic figure we have chosen for this beautiful Coonawarra Shiraz 2014 was Australia’s ultimate rock and roller. He was the frontman of a band that is now one of the biggest rock bands in music history. Their name sits comfortably amongst other such rock royalty including The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Who and Queen.
The band and this Iconic frontman cut their teeth in the crowded beer barns of Australia in the 70’s. They did the hard yards of pub rock covered in blood, sweat and beer to produce a unique guitar-driven sound with unique but simple guitar riffs and guttural screams attached to lyric’s so easily penned by this Iconic urban poet. He was a wild man and lived live to the full; he took all his passions and vices to the limit which ultimately led to his untimely death just as the band was becoming an international success. As they say only the good die young!
It was easy to fit to match the Coonawarra Icon Shiraz 2014 with this iconic singer. He had a strong connection with South Australia throughout the early 1970’s. He lived in the South Australia in a share house and was known to be very fond of the big red wines from the SA wine regions. It was his time in South Australia that gave him his love and appreciation of South Australian red wines in particular.
He would have loved this Coonawarra Icon Shiraz 2014 as just like him it is balsy, in your face smooth and cheeky. The fruit flavours don’t dominate; they just sit back and let you enjoy the smooth tannins and elegant finish. Just like our Icon you can sit back and enjoy his simple but elegant explanations of life in his lyrics. No strings attached to either this wine or the Icon.
Comments from Wine Buyer Steve:
I could not think of a better Iconic figure to attach to this Coonawarra Icon Shiraz 2014! I have loved the band and this man all my life and I have read many books about his upbringing in Western Australia and also later in South Australia. When we were thinking of what wine we could match him to, this Coonawarra Icon Shiraz 2014 was the perfect fit. This wine was produced from 25-year-old vines and matured for 22 months in French oak. It is medium-bodied and displays blackberry fruit notes, offering ripe cherry, black current, white pepper and oak flavours with a long, balanced tannin finish. I hope you enjoy it whilst listening to this Icon belting out his signature tunes.
My Score 93/100 Gold Medal.
