Mount Barker Urban Shiraz 2017
About The Producer
The winery that produces this awesome Mount Barker Shiraz 2017 is a boutique, family owned and operated vineyard in the Mt Barker Wine Region of Western Australia. The vineyard is a few kilometers from the Kendenup township, 20 kilometers from Mt Barker and 70 kilometers north of Albany on the edge of the Southern Ocean. The climate is cool and dry with warm summers.
The vineyard has sensational views north-east to the Stirling Ranges and south-east to the Porongurups. Gentle sea breezes blow from the south-west and south-east, and on summer evenings cool air flows down from the slopes of the Stirling Ranges.
The vineyard sits atop a local high point on well-drained gravelly loam, rich in lime and free of salt. It is an ideal location for growing cool climate Shiraz and Riesling. The Great Southern is fast developing a reputation as one of the premium Riesling growing regions in Australia. But don’t forget the Shiraz, or Cabernet Sauvignon. These two reds are outstanding varieties in the region.
They first planted vines of Shiraz and Riesling in September 2001 with the first vintages harvested in 2004. Our wines are made by acclaimed winemaker Mike Garland with the Shiraz winning medals at the Sydney Royal Show and Qantas Mt Barker Show. Royal Show and Qantas Mount Barker Show.
About the region
Mount Barker is one of the 5 nominated subregions of the Great Southern wine region in Western Australia, which is Australia’s largest wine region with a rectangle 200 kilometres from east to west and over 100 kilometres from north to south. The area has been described as ‘the birthplace of the Great Southern wine region’ and has won numerous awards for a variety of wines. Situated as it is in the middle of the Great Southern, the continental aspects of the climate make this quintessential country for Riesling and Shiraz. Mount Barker’s continentality also means greater diurnal temperature fluctuations and the occasional spring frost. The Plantagenet Plateau, with Mount Barker its centre point, is marked by its marri soils, lateritic gravelly/sandy loams coming directly from granite rock protrusions.
Comments From Wine Buyer Steve
Our company prides itself on dealing with small family operated wineries throughout Australia. We find that these small operators put the most love and passion into their wines and the supplier of this Mt Barker Urban Shiraz 2017 is no exception. The wine is rich in black pepper and red berry fruit and is typical of the best Great Southern cool climate shirazes. It shows hints of liquorice, spicy oak, supple tannin. This wine was matured for 12 months on French Oak. It represents sensational value for money at $11.00 per bottle. Score 91/100 WACC Silver Medal.
